Inflammatory Bowel Disease | Rory Hornstein | Registered Dietitian | Calgary and Surrounding Areas

The challenges involved in dealing with a chronic illness like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) can be vast and intrusive. To “get well” does not mean to “cure” this disease. Rather, it means you can successfully manage this disease, by helping the bowel function better which thereby decreases the devastating symptoms of this complicated illness. With the increasing number of people struggling with digestive disorders like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn’s and Colitis) and IBS, there is growing interest in ideas about what to eat to best deal with the challenges of living with IBD. A Registered Dietitian can offer an individualized nutrition consultation to help you feel better, reduce your symptoms, and gain control over your illness.

For those suffering from Inflammatory Bowel Disease, A Registered Dietitian can help in a number of ways. A registered dietitian can:

  • Teach you what foods help the bowel to heal, and what foods reduce the risk of inflammation and flare-ups
  • Discover what foods help to re-nourish your body, improve your immune system, and promote energy and overall health
  • Discover the importance of proper digestion and nutrient absorption
  • Teach you recipes that have high nutrient value but do not cause distress on the bowel
  • Teach you how food labels play a key role in providing important and useful information about the foods we buy
  • Empower you to take control of your illness
  • Use the power of diet in conjunction with traditional medicine to help you control your digestive disorder
Nutrition is the link between feeling sick and feeling well!

Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation

The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC) believes that a cure will be found for Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. To realize this, the CCFC is committed to raising funds for medical research. The CCFC also believes it is important to make all individuals with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) aware of the foundation, and to educate these individuals, their families, health professionals, and the general public, about these diseases.

MyIBD App

SickKids has launched a free mobile app to empower teens and parents of young children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) to take control of the disease. MyIBD app allows patients to track their food, stool, pain, and frequency of washroom visits all on their mobile device. It also provides educational tools to help manage these symptoms. MyIBD app can also benefit adults with IBD, and is currently available for free in the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and the iPod touch. It will also be available to Android devices later this year.
