Many people have food intolerances, or allergies to specific foods or food groups, which means that their body’s immune system reacts to a substance in a food, usually a protein, that the body sees as harmful. This sets off a chain reaction within the body, which results in symptoms ranging from mild (runny nose or itchy eyes), to severe or even life threatening. Food intolerances are different from an allergy, in that the symptoms can be unpleasant, including abdominal cramping or diarrhea, but they are not life-threatening.
